DIY Makeup Vanity Table
Materials Needed
- 1" x 6" Pine Board (36" long): Ideally, find it pre-cut, but longer lengths work if you're ready to cut it down.
- 2" x 2" Furring Strip (36" long): Similar to the pine board, you might need to purchase a longer piece and cut it.
- 3 ½" Long Construction Screws: Prepare to use 5-6 of these, depending on your wall's stud arrangement.
- 1 ⅝" Long Construction Screws: You'll need about six.
- Paint: The author used a semi-gloss black. Choose a color that complements your décor.
- Cabinet Knob: Pick one that fits your style.
Tools Needed
- Saw: Circular, Miter, or Chop Saw (The author used a miter saw).
- Brad Nailer or Hammer and Finish Nails: The preference was for a Brad nailer in the project.
- Clamps: To hold pieces firmly while they bond.
- Drill and Drill Bits: These are used to piec everything together securely.
- Stud Finder: Essential for mounting the table solidly.
- Level: To ensure your vanity is perfectly horizontal.
Project Steps
Preparing the Components
Cut the Boards to Size:
- To serve as the top and bottom of your vanity, resize the 1" x 12" pine boards to precisely 36 inches.
- From the offcuts, saw two 4-inch segments to act as the sides.
Assemble the Table Frame:
- Spread wood glue on one edge of each of the 4-inch side pieces.
- Secure them to the ends of one 36-inch board, using either a brad nailer or nails and a hammer.
Construct the Top:
- Flip the semi-assembled frame.
- Apply glue on the exposed edges of the 4-inch pieces, then position the other 36-inch piece on top. Secure with nails.
- Clamp the pieces to ensure tight adhesion while drying.
Prepare the Support and Storage:
- Cut the 1" x 6" board and the 2" x 2" furring strip to their final lengths (36 inches and 34 ½ inches, respectively).
Bringing it All Together
Paint Your Work:
- Apply your chosen paint to both the vanity frame and the 1" x 6" board. The original project went for three coats of semi-gloss black. Note: The 2" x 2" strip remains unpainted.
Mounting the Vanity
Position the Support Strip:
- Determine the preferred height and secure the 2" x 2" strip to your wall, ensuring it's level.
Attach the Table to the Support:
- Select the vanity's backside. Attach corner braces inside the back edge, aligning with your wall studs.
- Position the 1" x 6" panel (soon-to-be storage) face down in front of the vanity and attach the hinges as indicated.
- Mount the vanity on the support strip, securing it with the smaller screws after pre-drilling the pilot holes.
Finalize the Installation:
- Open the front panel, secure the corner brackets from the inside to the wall, and attach your chosen knob.
- Fill any visible screw holes with putty and touch up with paint as needed.
The simplicity and satisfaction of a morning well-started at your new, chic makeup vanity. It's not just a piece of furniture; it's a personal statement, a space where beauty and organization blend seamlessly. It's not just a table but a heaven for your daily rituals.
