Whatever the reason, installing a cat door on your own is much easier than hiring a professional. Check out the steps below to make awesome DIY Cat Door Ideas work.

  • If you want to install a cat door, the first step is to measure your door. The door needs to be at least ¾-inch wide and 1-inch tall.
  • If your cat door is ¾-inch, you'll need a ¾-inch hole. If it's 1-inch, you'll need a 1-inch hole.
  • Next, you'll need to choose a flap size. A round flap will admit cats up to about 3 pounds, while a square flap will admit cats up to about 5 pounds.
  • Measure your hole's width and length, then subtract an inch. For example, if you have a ¾-inch hole that needs to be 1 inch wide, you'd measure ¾ minus an inch, which would be ¾ x ¾ - 1 inch = 1 ⅞ inches. A 1-inch door needs to be 1 ⅞ inches by 1 ⅞ inches.

DIY Cat Door

So why take a door off your house, deck, or garage to install a Cat door? Isn't that crazy? If you have a kitty who insists on going out and passing out in gopher holes or dying from exposure to cold weather, or maybe she's pregnant, then it's a pretty good idea! Cats, as predators, will return home. That's as true now as it was when they were domesticated thousands of years ago. The kitty door design I used is simple, and the instructions here are easy to follow. An easy, inexpensive way to give your cats access to your backyard or another room without having to unlock the door for them.

DIY Cat Pet Door:

This video will show you how to build a cat door, so your cats can roam outside while keeping your dog out of the litterbox. It utilizes a small dog flap, thin bolt, and bolt stop. The installation was super easy. You can cut the thin sheet metal in about 15 minutes with tin snips. Drill the holes in the wallboard and hang the thin steel sheet via thin screws (very thin screws). The thin metal will bend like paper and hold up to 4 pressure-treated deck boards for mounting. We used only one screw every 6 inches through the back of the thin metal into each stud in the wall.

DIY Cat Door for Hollow Core Interior Doors

Supervisor Kitteh had to have one of his own. The big door on the back of the house was far too cold in the winter, drafty in the summer, and had that pesky doorknob that could be dangerous for your little one. He liked the cat flap but hated all the cold air coming in. After some thought, we realized there were no fancy, expensive cat doors on the market, so we decided to make him a custom-fit cat door for his large frame. After measuring and trying out different openings on some spare hollow core interior doors, we had just what this special kitty needed.

The Cutest Cat Door Ever

The Cutest Cat Door Ever Save

I designed this cute kitty door to look adorable for my cats and be functional. Since the space was small, without much depth, I wanted to keep everything as deep as possible, which is why it looks like it's leaning backward a bit. I also made the opening vertical instead of horizontal to tuck their heads out to go in and out easily. Added bonus -- it opens inward, which means no hardware on the outside of the wall!
