Abbreviations (US Terminology)

  • ch: Chain
  • sc: Single Crochet
  • hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • dc: Double Crochet
  • tr: Treble Crochet
  • sl st: Slip Stitch
  • yo: Yarn Over

Special Notes

  1. Sizing: This tutorial demonstrates the medium size with an oversized fit. Customizations for other sizes (small, large, XL, etc.) are provided in chain adjustments.
  2. For a snug fit, reduce the initial chain count proportionally. For a looser fit, increase it.
  3. The pattern alternates between half-double crochet rows and extended treble crochet rows, creating a breathable texture.

Pattern Instructions

Step 1: Front and Back Panels

Each panel is worked individually and then joined at the shoulders.

Foundation Chain:
  1. Begin with a slip knot.
  2. Chain 92 + 1 (for medium size). Add or subtract chains in multiples of 2 for larger or smaller sizes.
    • Example for small: 82 + 1.
    • Example for large: 102 + 1.
    • Adjust length depending on the desired overall fit.

Rows 1 & 2: Half-Double Crochet Rows
  1. Yarn over and insert your hook into the second chain from the hook.
  2. hdc across the row.
  3. Chain 1, turn your work, and repeat, working 1 hdc into each stitch for Row 2.
Row 3: Extended Treble Crochet
  1. Changing Color: Do not finish the last hdc. Attach the second color, secure with a knot, and pull through the final 2 loops.
  2. Ch 6, this counts as your first extended treble crochet.
  3. Yarn over 4 times, insert your hook into the next stitch:
    • Yarn over, pull through.
    • Yarn over, pull through 2 loops. Repeat this step 3 more times until 2 loops remain on the hook.
    • Yarn over, pull through the final 2 loops.
  4. Continue this across the row to create elongated stitches with visible gaps.
    Save
Row 4 and Beyond
  1. Repeat Rows 1 through 3 (alternating 2 rows of hdc and 1 row of extended treble crochet) until the desired length is reached.
  2. For guidance, the sample piece uses 9 rows of extended treble crochet, but feel free to adjust based on personal preference or body height.

Important Note: Be sure to make an hdc in the top chain of the extended crochet row to prevent the panel from shrinking as rows progress.

Step 2: Neckline

  1. Fold your panel in half and mark the center point using a stitch marker.
  2. From the center, count 8 stitches to the left and right, then place stitch markers at the 9th stitches on both sides.
  3. Change to Color 2 and continue with your extended treble stitches within the marked area, following the established pattern.
  4. To shape the neckline, decrease by working 2 stitches together at the start and end of every other row.
  5. Decrease until the desired width is achieved for the neckline.
    Save

Step 3: Sleeves

Each sleeve is a large rectangular panel worked in extended treble crochet rows.

Foundation Chain:
  1. Chain 70 + 1 (adjust for wider or narrower sleeves).
Rows:
  1. Work 9 rows of extended treble crochet, following the same stitching technique from the body panels.
Wrist Detail:
  1. Chain to measure 25 inches.
  2. Work popcorn stitches as follows:
    • Chain 3, then make 4 more dc into the same chain.
    • Pull the loop up slightly and insert your hook into the first dc.
    • Yarn over, pull through to close the stitch, and chain 1.
    • Repeat as needed to create a series of popcorn stitches.
      Save
  3. Weave this piece through the wrist edge of the sleeve to create a cinched effect.

Step 4: Assembly

  1. Shoulders: Join the front and back panels at the shoulders using slip stitches or single crochets.
  2. Sleeves: Attach each sleeve to the main body. Use stitch markers to ensure the sleeves are evenly aligned, folding at the shoulder seam for symmetry.
  3. Side Seams: Seam the sides of the body and sleeves together, using slip stitches or single crochets to close the garment.

Step 5: Final Neckline Detail

  1. Add a neat border of sc around the neckline:
    • Attach yarn at any point of the neckline, chain 1, and work 1 sc into each stitch.
    • Slip stitch into the first sc and fasten off.
      Save

Pattern Variation

Colors:

  • Experiment with ombre shades, striped patterns, or alternating colors for stripes within the extended treble crochet rows.
  • Use a single color for a minimalistic design.

Sizes:

  • Adjust the foundation chain and the number of rows for both the body panels and sleeves to create the desired size:
    • Small: 82 + 1 for the foundation chain.
    • Large: 102 + 1 or more.
    • Tip: Always ensure the panels remain proportional for a balanced look.

Tips for Success

  • Check Gauge: Work a small swatch beforehand to ensure your stitches match your desired sizing.
  • Use Stitch Markers: Mark critical points to maintain symmetry.
  • Weave in Ends as You Go: This will save time during finishing.
  • Block Your Finished Top: Blocking ensures that the stitches are even and the garment has a polished look.

Conclusion

Once assembled, the final oversized top is lightweight, effortlessly versatile, and flattering. The combination of structured body panels, bell or cinched sleeves, and the elegant neckline border adds a polished, breathable design element. Pair it with jeans for a casual look or layer over a dress for a chic outfit.
