Easy Crochet Market/Beach Bag Pattern

This beginner-friendly crochet pattern teaches you how to make a beautiful and practical bag, perfect for the market or beach. The pattern features a sturdy base, a decorative body with lacy and solid sections, a unique scalloped edging, and long, comfy handles. The bag is worked in seamless rounds from the bottom up, with easy-to-memorize stitches and lots of room for customization. Optional: finish with a flower or accessory for a personal touch!

Pattern Notes

  • The bag is made in the round from the base up, with increases at the base and a mix of half double and double crochet stitches for the body.
  • The body includes alternating rows of solid and openwork (fillet) double crochet for both strength and style.
  • A slip stitch and chain “scallop” edging creates a neat finish.
  • The long handles are made separately and then sewn securely to the bag.
  • You can adjust the starting chain for a larger or smaller bag.
  • Yarn choice affects drape and stretch; acrylic or cotton are both suitable.

  • Final round:
    • Ch 3, sl st in same st (makes a "picot" or mini scallop).
    • Sl st in next 3 sts, ch 3, sl st in same st.
    • Repeat: (sl st in next 3 sts, ch 3, sl st in same st) around.
  • When you come to end, ch 1 and sl st to finish off.
  • Cut yarn and pull through to secure.
